If you are one of those innumerable others who suffer periodically from stiff joints, you probably know the significance of having a heating pad at home. If you have one of those electrical heating pads, you should know by experience that they don’t last. And about the hot water ones, the less sad the better. Boiling and pouring hot water repeatedly can be quite a cumbersome task. If you don’t have a heating pad at home or are not happy with the one you have at home, it is time you made one. All you need to make this heating pad is patience and well, basic sewing skills.
You will need cotton cloth, scissors, rice, lavender essential oil, sewing machine, funnel, thread and a needle for making this heating pad. You can make use of old cotton T-shirts or pillow cases for making this heating pad.
Cut The Cloth:
Take the cotton cloth and cut it into two rectangular pieces based on the size you want your heating pad to be. Make sure both the pieces are of the same size.
Mix Rice And Essential Oil:
Mix together the rice and a few drops of essential oil. You can make use of your favorite essential oil like lavender, lemon, etc. for making this heating pad. The quantity of rice and essential oil depends upon the size of the heating pad. Remember, the more the rice the better your heating pad will hold the heat.
Sew The Cloth:
Place the cotton cloth pieces on top of each other in such a way that the wrong sides face outward and sew along the edges using a sewing machine. You can sew 3 sides completely. For the fourth side, leave a gap of 1 inch towards the end while sewing.
Turn The Bag Inside Out:
Now, you should have something resembling a sack in your hands with the wrong side facing out. Turn the bag inside out by making use of the gap left while stitching.
Fill Bag With Rice:
Place the funnel in the gap and start pouring rice into the bag. Once the bag is filled with rice, you can close the gap by sewing with a needle and thread.
You can make use of this scented rice heating pad for cramps, muscle pain, joint aches, etc. You will just have to pop the bag in the microwave for about a minute before using it. The time required to heat the bag will vary depending upon the size of the bag.
