Food is one of the basic requirements of a human being. Â Industrial revolution has led to the farm lands being used to build industries; with the growing population, forest lands are leading the way to concrete jungles as man needs place to live. All these are leading to severe shortage of food. Whatever be the conditions, man needs food to survive. Hence, man is trying hard to find alternate methods other than using land to grow food which are economical as well as productive and uses locally available material.

Using Containers
Food plants can be grown in containers. This would be one of the best ways to grow plants as they can be placed anywhere be it balcony or driveway. They don’t occupy more space also. Few plants can also be grown indoors in the containers. A windowsill is also the best place to put containers and the greens required.

Hydroponics are those plants which can be grown in water. They do not require land for their growth. They can be placed in containers of water and good sunlight helps them grow in abundance.
Use Of Flower Beds
So what if you don’t have large prices of land to grow plants! Plants can be grown in the flower beds too. They do not require much space and seasonal plants can easily be grown in flower beds. If you are staying in a rented place also, the flower beds can easily be removed if the house owner or the next tenant is not interested in growing food on their own.
Hanging Baskets
Just imagine tomatoes, lettuce, mint etc., hanging out of the baskets in front of you home or in your balcony!! Not just does it provide a wonderful sight to see but you also get to eat fresh home grown food. This is one of the best ways to grow food without land. This can become a household activity and would help keep the elderly and the children occupied for hours.
Community Gardens
This is the latest in things. Like most of the other places where there is community activity involved, growing plants has also become a community activity. Growing crop along with others is a great way to learn new things as well. Another advantage of community garden is that one can share their crop with the others and in this way get much more varieties than what is grown by them.
