French Toast or egg bread, gypsy toast, German toast or Spanish toast is a dish of bread soaked in beaten eggs and milk and then fried. It is dated back to 4th to 5th century where it is mentioned in the Apicius, a collection of Latin Recipe.It can be served as breakfast, an afternoon tea snack and also you can serve it as a desert as it is basically a sweet dish. In french speaking regions, it is also referred as “pain perdu” or “lost bread” in English. It is called so as it is one of the way to revive and reuse the otherwise stall bread. The hard bread is thus softened and sweetened in the process and it can be served with Jam, Maple Syrup or Honey.
So Here Is How You Can Prepare The French Toast
Preparation Time – 10 Mins
Cooking Time – 5 mins
Serving – 4
Bread – 16 bread slices ( 1 or 2 days older / stale bread)
Milk – 4 Cup
Egg – 8
Sugar – 4 – 6 Tablespoon ( This can vary according to the sweetness you require)
Salt – As per taste
Vanilla Extract – 4 Teaspoon
Cinnamon – 4 Teaspoon Grounded
Butter – As required for frying
Jam or maple syrup or honey
First cut diagonally each bread slice into half. It is better if you can use 1 or 2 days older bread as it will be harder and the stale bread will soak up more egg milk mixture without falling apart
Now add milk, egg, sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon into a mixing bowl and beat it thoroughly. Beat it at least for 5 – 7 mins as the more you beat the mixture the more thoroughly it will be mixed and it will have more foam into it. Add the salt as per your taste
Now heat a frying pan and add butter. wait till the butter is totally melted and coated throughout the pan
Now dip each slice of bread (each side) into the egg milk mixture for 2 – 4 seconds which will be enough for the bread to soak the mixture and put into the frying pan. Cook in medium heat until slightly browned on both sides
Take the bread out from the pan and place it directly in the serving plate. Add Jam or Maple Syrup or Honey according to your preference and serve it hot.
For serving it in breakfast, serve it with cheese omelet or pain omelet or egg poach, fruits of your choice with a glass of milk. It will be a quick, nice and healthy breakfast to be remembered and asked to be served again.
